TifTuf™ was meticulously developed from a pool of 27,700 experimental bermuda grass genotypes. In 1999, out of this extensive selection, ninety of the most promising genotypes were carefully cultivated under a rainout shelter and subjected to rigorous evaluation until 2001, all while being subjected to deficit irrigation. Amid this drought stress, TifTuf™ (initially tested under the experimental name DT-1) distinguished itself by maintaining its quality and lush green color for the longest duration.

Before its official release, TifTuf™ underwent rigorous testing in 19 drought-stress trials, along with 2 sports field wear tolerance trials, involving the use of the Cady traffic simulator.
